Mutual of Omaha was founded in 1909 under the name Mutual Benefit Health and Accident Association. They originally served as a health an accident insurance company. In 1917 the company was among the first to offer coverage to working women entering the workplace as a result of World War I, and in 1929 Mabel L. Criss became the company’s first woman to hold office when she was elected Vice President and General Manager.

Mutual Benefit, as the company was known at the time, began offering hospital insurance to families as a response to the Great Depression. Later, in 1950, they changed their name to Mutual of Omaha, and in 1966 they were selected by the government to administer the then-new Medicare program.

Today, Mutual of Omaha is known not only for its insurance products but also for its corporate sponsorships, many of which support nature education and conservation efforts.
