Headquartered in Tampa, Florida, WellCare Health Plans focuses exclusively on providing government-sponsored managed care services, primarily through Medicaid, Medicare Advantage, and Medicare Prescription Drug Plans.

Over 30 years specializing in Medicare and Medicaid programs, WellCare serves approximately 4.4 million members nationwide as of December 31, 2017; and provides access to approximately 427,000 contracted health care providers.

Founded in 1985 as a Medicaid provider serving the state of Florida, WellCare started offering private insurance to Medicare beneficiaries a decade later as a response to changes in their business model brought about by the Balanced Budget Act of 1997. In 2004 the company went public on the New York Stock Exchange.

WellCare refocused their brand in 2017 to include an emphasis on holistic health. In 2018 CMS awarded the company with four out of five stars for the quality of their Medicare plans. That same year, Fortune magazine included them in its World’s Most Admired Companies list.
