AHIP & Carrier Certifications Explained
The topic of annual certifications for Medicare agents can get a bit fuzzy at times, in part because they happen at the same time of year, and in part because they are related, in a way.
AHIP Certification
AHIP is an industry organization that, among other services, provides training and yearly certification for Medicare agents. While not all carriers require AHIP, the vast majority do.
Carrier Certifications
Most carriers require their own internal certification in addition to AHIP.
In other words, if you’re an active selling agent, you’ll take AHIP each year, then take additional certifications for most if not all carriers whose products you sell.
What to Expect for AHIP & Carrier Certifications in 2023
If you haven’t yet completed your AHIP certification for 2022, wait for the 2023 test because it will cover you for the rest of 2022. A few more details:
- The AHIP test is open book.
- You may retake AHIP if you fail, however, most carriers limit the number of attempts you can make. It varies between carriers, but limiting the test to 3 attempts is quite common.
